Venable Foundation Annual Report | FY2021

up time lost because of the shift to virtual learning. Since the pandemic began, students experienced learning losses due to a variety of factors, such as a lack of technology and inconsistency of instruction. While educational disruptions affected students of all ages and backgrounds, the loss has been more keenly felt among already vulnerable low-income communities. Our Impact Grants were intended to assist nonprofits as they ramped up to address the additional demand for services as the world reopened. These grants totaled $500,000 and benefited nine organizations in the firm’s communities: Baltimore, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, and Washington, DC. Each Venable office awarded $100,000 to bridge the achievement gap and help these grantees bring students up to grade-level proficiency in math and literacy through intensive tutoring and family engagement. A full spotlight on these grantees follows later in this report. The Venable Foundation awarded $3,605,000 to our nonprofit partners during the 2021 grant season. We are proud that the firm’s partnership remains dedicated to benefiting the community. Attorneys and staff have engaged with 60% of the grantees as volunteers, supporters, or board members, demonstrating our commitment to community service. As we look forward to another impactful year of grantmaking, we will continue to identify areas of need and find meaningful ways to support our communities. Lindsay B.
